Snowballz - 0.9.4

Description

Take command of your army of penguins as you blaze your path to victory! March through snow laden forests to conqueror new frontiers and grow your small army. Ambush enemy lines with blasts of freezing snowballs. But don't neglect your home, invaders are just over the next snow drift! Gather fish for your cold penguins to munch on as they warm up in your cozy igloo. It's a snowy world you don't want to miss!

Changes

* Terrain height! Yes, there are now hills and vallies for your penguins to march through! All three maps have a new improved feel to them.

* Major optimizations using Rabbyt (sorry, but this dependency is well worth it's salt). The game runs much faster now (especially noticeable on slower computers). Using Rabbyt also enables the game to have a lot of particles and new visual effects without any speed decrease.

* Networking fixed! It has been broken for two versions as far as I can tell, all fixed up again. So be sure to try playing against your friends! (yes yes... I'll setup a gaming server sometime...)

Also, I'm looking for help! I need a good blender user for doing a scene or two for the main menu as well as someone to make some fitting music for the game. If you think you can help or know someone who would want to please contact me at web (@) joey101 net! Thanks!

You've done a good job with the AI commentary.

ImportError: No module named glFreeType

I've tried 0.95 on Suse and Ubuntu, both the same message. Google doesn't help.

If you could make/recruit units, climb tec trees and have 30 different types of units, what would make it different from other RTS games? :)

LCTRL stands for the "Left Control" (key)

I don't have any trouble getting around the map, I actually like the mini map you get when you press "space" a lot...

I also think the gameplay is a lot of fun (at least playing against other humans in multiplayer mode). But more maps are coming with new game play on each. Planed things include avalanches, big horns and snow nukes. :)

Very nice game, only a few suggestions/questions.

Can you make more units? How?

Could you place the mini-map somewhere on the main screen, instead of pressing, what is it LCRTL? Could you make it easier to navigate the world?

Could you make the maps smaller, or make there something more to do than taking over others igloos, and gathering resources.

Could you make it a little more rts-ish with units you can recruit, and you have different techs, etc.

This is a great looking game, and what is there of the game-play is nice too, it just needs a bit more game-play, and some polish ;)

Good news, we got Rabbyt to compile in windows. Just download it at the cheese shop!

Please note that it will only work on python 2.5! It's very difficult to compile for 2.4

Hehe, I do have linux, but I havent used it in so long that I wouldnt feel comfortable using it again until I re-install it ;) And I dont have the time right now to relearn just the basics of linux.

Hopefully you can get rabbyt to compile for windows :)
BTW, are the older versions still available for download? I might try playing one of them, until this version works.

Um... get linux? kidding

We've been trying to get rabbyt to run on windows. We did succeed in getting it to compile but the display was messed up.

Thats fine, if you are on linux :/
What about those of us who are still on windows.
I cant get pyrex to compile the rabbyt files, I get the following error:

running install
running bdist_egg
running egg_info

I have looked for some pyrex help on the matter(it appears to be a pyrex thing...) but cant find any...
Could anyone tell me how I should be doing things, or better yet, could they just compile rabbyt up for me so I can just run it???
July 12, 2007 1:25pm - Joey Marshall - nickname: (joey101)
You can just download the linux binaries for rabbyt from the cheese shop so you don't have to even get pyrex (as rabbyt will already be compiled).

Wow, this looks great!

I haven't been able to play yet, though, as you require rabbyt, and rabbyt(it seems) requires pyrex? but doesnt say so...
And I haven'y used pyrex before, so I have no idea how I should compile, whatever the files in rabbyt, so they will be imported correctly.

I'll try later tonight or tomorrow.

Try getting the latest version of PyOpenGL.

Are you getting a problem similar to the ones on http://happypenguin.org/show?Snowballz ?
May 5, 2007 5:38pm - Claudio Canepa - nickname: (claxo)
Older vresions have worked for me, (1.0.1 and 1.0.3 I think) but this fails to run for me. Seems that you are using a newer version of pyOpenGL. ¿Can you tell what vs for pyOpenGL AND Numeric ?

wow, i like it - simple strategy game at its best :-)

Really cool game! How did you make the map? I found a bug too. When you click options, then you click back, then click options again. The game shuts down. Overall, its really cool.

Ah yes. I re uploaded it. My Internet connection isn't very good all the time. Sorry for the trouble!

BTW, I re uploaded it with some new features. It now has an experimental AI (it shouldn't crash the game, I have tested it quite a bit already. It just isn't very smart yet)

snowballz-0.0.3.tar.gz appears to be corrupted. I downloaded it multiple times. Maybe you should re-upload it.

Very nice game. Looks like SettlersIV. Graphic is good, but game should be better than you place more penguins(wariors,mages,priests... :D), rocks, trees, etc.
November 20, 2006 9:39pm - Claudio Canepa - nickname: (claxo)
Nice graphics. Gameplay is not much clear at this moment. You can`t select penguins ? Construction of a trainning facility begins but seems to stop, with no evident reason. Anyway, if at 0.0.2 have this looks, at 1.0.0 it will be a deluxe fist class game :)
