It wouldn't run for me, cannot read ".ico" file format. Had to comment out where it loads the ico, and then where it tries to use it. This should be fixable by just using set_ico without trying to load it as a surface.
The actual game is a pretty neat idea. I play a lot of boggle, but this adds a little bit of strategy that makes things a bit more interesting.

Thanks for the comment and getting past the problem with the icon file. Which platform are you on?

I'm on windows 7, of all places. You would expect ico to work :P I think it's python2.6 and pygame 1.9.1 as well.

Thanks - this helped to track it down. It appears to be specific to Python 2.6/pygame 1.9.1 on Windows 7! The issue seems to be fixed in Python 2.7 and pygame 1.9.2.a0 and I didn't see it on other platforms.
I uploaded a basic fix along the lines you suggested (basically don't load the icon) as Birdie Words 0.3.1 but now that I can see the actual error I can fix this more cleanly.
